Damaged riverbank caused by European Carp

In 1995 the farmers of the Riverina were desperate to stop the the Murray Darling Basin being taken over by that No 1 pest of the waterways – European Carp. European Carp (Cyprinus carpio) were introduced into our waterways in NE Victoria in the 1940’s and, with each fish laying over 1 million eggs per year, they have now reached plague proportions and have travelled as far north as Queensland.

In 1995, the farmers decided to turn an environmental negative into an environmental positive by turning this cockroach of the waterways into a fantastically effective liquid fertiliser. Because of the high level of nutrients, Omega 3 and vital trace elements found in the whole fish the trials by nurserymen, horticulturalists and home gardeners delivered stunning results. Who would have thought such a simple idea would have such a positive impact for both the farmers on their crops and pastures and for the city dwellers on their gardens and lawns.

How is Charlie Carp made?

It is really important to note that no native fish are harmed in the process of catching carp. Two methods are used to catch the carp. Electro fishing, primarily used in rivers and creeks, stuns the fish and brings them to the surface allowing the carp to be retrieved, and the native species to recover and swim away. In larger bodies of water such as lakes, nets are used, which also gives the opportunity to free the native fish.

Once caught, the carp are snap frozen and brought by refrigerated transport to the factory based in Deniliquin, NSW. They are then put through a mincer and into the rendering plant where water and stabiliser are added. The fish are cooked slowly and rendered down using a unique slow cook manufacturing process which ensures the preservation of essential macro and micro nutrients.

Once the cooking process is complete, the mixture, by now a concentrated and balanced plant food, is bottled, packaged and distributed. Our manufacturing plant in Deniliquin cooks approx 150 tonnes of European Carp a year, creating thousands of litres of effective fertiliser for your gardens, lawns, crops and pastures. As well as being sold on the Retail market, Charlie Carp is also sold Commercially to farmers, golf courses, sports grounds stadiums, race courses and Council premises.
